Unique design for a unique location
Opus was the Consulting Structural Engineer for this Great Barrier Reef Yacht Club project.
The uniquely designed Yacht Club is at the entrance of the boat harbour and features magnificent dual-water vistas of both the marina as well as Dent Passage.
The project also includes 35 Villas, each comprising four bedrooms over three luxurious levels. A joint venture between Hamilton Island owners, the Oatley family, and famed yachtsman Iain Murray, the Great Barrier Reef Yacht Club features recreational and business facilities, including contemporary indoor/outdoor restaurants and bars, conference and function rooms and an inspiring central atrium space; a private health club incorporating a marina-front gymnasium, two saunas, a heated 25 metre indoor lap pool and a private cellar dining room.
The challenging structural forms include pre-stressed concrete terraces that cantilever up to 9 metres over ‘keel shaped’ pedestals and curved vierendeel steel roofs, clad with copper, supported on delicate branched columns.
