Inner Sydney public housing showcases environmental innovation
Opus were engineers for the first major public housing redevelopment in Sydney’s inner city in two decades.
The $28m Redfern East Housing Redevelopment comprises four apartment buildings, one in each corner of the site. Two of the apartment buildings are three storeys; the other two are four. In between the apartment buildings are 40 town houses.
All the buildings are of load bearing masonry construction with reinforced concrete slabs and steel roofs. Each of the apartment buildings features a polycarbonate atrium roof.
The civil works component included detailed analysis and design of the storm-water overland flow system. We also designed a pipe system to take rainwater from the townhouse roofs to be recycled for garden use.
The project was awarded a 5 Star Greenstar rating by the Green Building Council of Australia. The Redfern redevelopment project has received recognition for its outstanding contributions to environmental innovation, leadership, efficiency and sustainability.
